Quatro d'Abril formed in the coastal town of Figueira da Foz in the 1980s with four members: Luís Represas on vocals and guitar, Pedro Aires Magalhães on bass, Vítor Rua on drums, and Carlos Marques on keyboards. They started playing local gatherings and festivals before their 1986 debut album 'Avé Maria' brought them national attention.
Their music mixed rock and pop with Portuguese folk influences, and their lyrics often touched on social themes. In 1989, their song 'Mira al Sol' drew accusations of blasphemy for depicting the crucifixion from a Roman soldier's perspective, but it became one of their most recognized tracks alongside songs like 'Un mal dia' and 'No llores mas'.
They kept releasing albums through the late 80s and early 90s, maintaining a sound built around intricate arrangements and melodic hooks rather than chasing trends.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
