Que Fim Levou Valdir was a Brazilian band from São Paulo that put out one album in 1984. The title track "1984" became their signature song, a dystopian rock piece that caught on with listeners during Brazil's political transition. The lineup was Valdir Neves on vocals and guitar, Beto Mariano on bass, and Marcos Thiago on drums.
Their sound had a punk and new wave edge, heard on songs like "Pão e Circo" and "O Monstro" from that same album. After releasing a couple more singles in the mid-80s, the group quietly stopped working together. Valdir Neves was reportedly detained for a time in 1987 over a political demonstration, which may have contributed to the band's end.
Today, the album "1984" and its title track are what most people remember. Other songs like "8528 Guarani" and "RxUxA" show the band's lean, tense style. The members went separate ways afterward, with Neves and Mariano doing some solo work and Thiago stepping back from music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
