Question Mark and The Mysterians formed in Saginaw, Michigan in 1962 with Rudy Martinez on vocals, Bobby Balderrama on guitar, Frank Rodriguez on bass, and Eddie Serrato on drums. Their 1965 single "96 Tears" became a surprise hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 with its raw organ riff and Martinez's distinctive vocal delivery. The song's success got them television appearances and a brief moment of national attention.
Beyond "96 Tears," the band recorded other garage rock tracks like "8' Teen" and "Do What You've Gotta Do" that captured their straightforward, energetic approach. They released several albums in the late 1960s including Action and Do It or Die, but never matched the commercial impact of their breakthrough single.
Martinez's legal troubles in 1966 disrupted the band's momentum, though they continued performing and recording into the 1970s and 1980s. In 2019, they were inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame. Their sound, particularly on "96 Tears," remains a touchstone for garage rock and punk musicians who appreciate its unpolished urgency.
