Editor's note

Quicksilver Messenger Service, San Francisco's psychedelic rock band

A key part of the late-60s San Francisco scene, known for bluesy rock and John Cipollina's guitar.

For a quick sense of their sound, try 'Fresh Air' or their take on 'Pride Of Man.' They're a solid slice of that San Francisco scene.

They were right there in San Francisco in 1965, part of that whole psychedelic rock wave. Songs like 'Fresh Air' from the 1971 album 'Happy Trails' show their mix of rock, blues, and folk. Their name even came from an Aldous Huxley character, which fits the era's literary vibe.

The band formed in 1965 with John Cipollina, David Freiberg, and Greg Elmore, releasing their debut in 1968. Lineups shifted often, Freiberg left in 1970, Cipollina in 1972, but they kept putting out albums like 'Shady Grove' into the 1970s. They played reunion shows later on, with Cipollina passing away in 1989.

Quicksilver Messenger Service formed in San Francisco in 1965 with guitarist John Cipollina, bassist David Freiberg, and drummer Greg Elmore. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1968, and they were part of that city's late-60s psychedelic rock scene. The band's name came from a character in Aldous Huxley's writing.

Their 1971 album 'Happy Trails' included the song 'Fresh Air,' which became one of their better-known tracks. They also recorded versions of 'Who Do You Love?' and 'Pride Of Man.' The group's sound mixed rock with blues and folk elements, and Cipollina's guitar work was a central feature.

Lineup changes were common. Freiberg left in 1970, and Cipollina departed in 1972. The band continued with different members through the 1970s, releasing albums like 'Shady Grove' and 'Solid Silver.' They played occasional reunion shows in later decades. John Cipollina died in 1989.
