Archive material and source history
Quizila formed in 2013 in Salvador, Bahia, when a few musicians got together around a shared interest in local rhythms. Their name comes from a Tupinambá word meaning 'enchanted.' The group includes Leandro Rocha on vocals and percussion, Jeremias Procópio on guitar and vocals, Daniel Cézar on bass, and Rafael Venâncio on drums.
They put out a self-titled debut album in 2015, and a second one called 'Bahia Ô' in 2018. That album's title track, 'Bahia Ô,' became something of an anthem for the region. Other songs like 'De olho na tela' and 'A Madura' show their mix of samba, reggae, and Afro-Brazilian sounds.
In 2016, there was a brief dispute over a melody they'd used from a traditional song, which they acknowledged and settled. Their lyrics often touch on love, social themes, and the landscape of Bahia itself.
