Quizomba formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 2000s, taking their name from an Angolan dance style. The band's founding members included Alex Góes on vocals, Marquinhos and Mateus on percussion, and Diego Aguiar on bass. Their music blended samba, funk, and Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
Their 2005 song "Festa Profana" became a breakout hit that sparked national debate. Some criticized its explicit lyrics about poverty and violence, while others saw it as commentary on marginalized communities. The track gave its name to their debut album, which found both critical and commercial success.
Later albums like "Enquanto a Chuva Cai" (2008) and "Dança dos Signos" (2011) showed the band developing their sound. Other songs in their catalog include "São Gonça" and "Sonhar Não Custa Nada."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
