Their sound drew from various sources including traditional Zulu folk songs, reggae, and soul. The group's core included Sipho Mchunu on lead vocals and guitar, Victor Ndlovu on drums, Dan Matakane on percussion, and Musa Mbuli contributing poetry and lyrics.
R2D released several albums during their active years, including "Isikhumbuzo" in 1976 and "Freedom" in 1987.
