Editor's note

Ra Ra Riot's indie rock with violin texture

A Syracuse band that carved out space with strings in the late 2000s indie scene.

For their early feel, 'Ghost Under Rocks' from 'The Rhumb Line' holds up. Later, 'Dance With Me' shows how they kept the energy.

They arrived with a sound that wasn't quite like other indie rock bands at the time, the violin Rebecca Zeller played gave songs like 'Is It Too Much' a different kind of lift. That 2010 track got some radio play and stuck around in their sets. Even on later albums like 'Beta Love' and 'Superbloom,' that string element remained part of their identity.

They formed in Syracuse in 2006 and released their first album, 'The Rhumb Line,' in 2008. Through the 2010s they kept putting out records, including 'Need Your Light' in 2016 and 'Superbloom' in 2020.

Ra Ra Riot formed in Syracuse, New York in 2006. The band's early lineup included Wes Miles on vocals and guitar, Milo Bonacci on bass, Mathieu Santos on keyboards, Rebecca Zeller on violin, and Cameron Wisch on drums. Their first album, 'The Rhumb Line,' came out in 2008.

Their 2010 song 'Is It Too Much' got some radio play and became a regular part of their set. They've put out a few albums since then, including 'Beta Love' in 2013 and 'Superbloom' in 2020. Some of their other songs that people know include 'Each Year,' 'Oh, La,' and 'Dance With Me.'

They've always had that violin in the mix, which gave them a different texture than a lot of other indie rock bands at the time. They kept making music through the 2010s, releasing 'Need Your Light' in 2016.
