Racey formed in Coventry around 1979 with guitarist Tim Gooding and keyboardist Andy Richards. They eventually landed a deal with EMI in the early 1980s. Their first single, 'Lay Your Love On Me,' didn't catch on, but their follow-up changed things.
In 1984, 'Kitty' became a major UK hit. The song's catchy melody and somewhat provocative video, featuring singer Timothy Scott in drag, drew attention and some criticism. It established them as a pop act of the moment.
After 'Kitty,' the band released other singles like 'Shame' and 'Rest of My Love.' Internal tensions grew, partly from label pressure, and by 1987, founding members Gooding and Richards had left the group.
