Four MCs from São Paulo's peripheries who turned street reportage into Brazilian hip-hop landmarks.
If you want to hear what they're about, start with 'Beco Sem Saída' or 'Periferia É Periferia'. The lyrics don't argue or justify, they just lay out the reality.
Racionais MC's gave voice to experiences that rarely made it into mainstream Brazilian culture in the late '80s and '90s. Songs like 'Beco Sem Saída' described police brutality, drugs, and lack of opportunities in plain, unflinching language. Their music became a shared language in São Paulo's neighborhoods, more like reportage than entertainment.
They formed in 1988 in São Paulo with Mano Brown, Ice Blue, Edi Rock, and KL Jay. Their 1993 debut 'Raio X Brasil' established their sound, but 1997's 'Sobrevivendo no Inferno' became a landmark. While influenced by Public Enemy, their sound was distinctly Brazilian, sometimes weaving in samba and funk.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
