That recording, which appeared on his 1992 debut album, drew some criticism for its sensual delivery but found a wide audience anyway. He had been playing in local clubs with a band called Grupo Semente before that.
His second album was self-titled, and he followed it with records like Rio Bossa in 2002. Later albums such as Canções do Mar and Novos Tempos incorporated Brazilian folk and samba alongside the bossa nova foundation. Another song people know is "Mina Louca."
He has worked regularly with guitarist Daniel Jobim. The music stays rooted in Brazilian styles, moving between traditional bossa and other rhythms without much fuss.
