Rafael Hernandez was born in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico in 1892. He learned guitar from his father and eventually moved to New York City in the early 1920s, where he played in Don Azpiazu's orchestra.
He formed his own orchestra and toured through the 1930s and 40s. His song 'Diez años' came out in 1943, and other pieces like 'El Buen Borincano' and 'Campanitas de cristal' became part of his catalog. He wrote boleros and dance tunes, and his work drew from Puerto Rican folk traditions.
Hernandez died in 1965. His recordings include albums like 'El Disco de Oro de Rafael Hernández' from 1945 and 'Canciones de Rafael Hernández' from 1950.
