Background notes

Archive material and source history

Rafael Orozco came from Becerril, a town in Colombia's Caribbean region. He started singing vallenato, a traditional style built around accordion and caja vallenata rhythms. In 1976, he teamed up with accordionist Israel Romero to form Binomio de Oro, a partnership that would define much of his career.

With Binomio de Oro, Orozco recorded songs like "La Creciente" and "Que Sera De Mi." Their music reached listeners across Latin America. Orozco wrote many of their lyrics, often working within vallenato's established forms rather than reinventing them.

He died in 1992. Some of his recordings, including those early Binomio de Oro albums, still get played on Colombian radio stations that feature vallenato.
