Rai formed in Figueira da Foz in 1984 with Quim Barreiros on vocals, Nuno Rafael on bass, Zé Pedro Leitão on guitar, and João Ribas on drums. Their sound mixed punk with Portuguese folk elements, which stood out from what was popular at the time. They released their first album in 1987, also called 'Rai,' and its single 'Bagaça' became something of an anthem.
They kept touring and put out four more albums through 1995: 'Filhos da Rai,' 'Duro,' 'Rai-vá-Rai,' and 'Rai V.' Other tracks like 'Desinfeta' and 'Você' carried the same raw, energetic feel.
Their lyrics often dealt with poverty and social issues, which resonated during Portugal's political changes in the 1980s. The band's live shows were known for their intensity, and they developed a reputation for speaking plainly about things others avoided.
