Formed after Blackmore left Deep Purple, Rainbow blended heavy guitar with Ronnie James Dio's mythic lyrics.
For the classic Rainbow sound, start with 'Stargazer' or 'A Light In The Black.' If you want the later, radio-friendly turn, 'Since You Been Gone' tells that story.
Rainbow gave Ritchie Blackmore space to stretch beyond Deep Purple's blues-rock framework. With Ronnie James Dio handling vocals and lyrics, songs like 'Stargazer' and 'A Light In The Black' turned hard rock into epic fantasy. That combination, Blackmore's precise, melodic guitar and Dio's theatrical delivery, created a sound that still echoes in metal and classic rock.
The band formed in 1975 with Dio on vocals, releasing 'Rising' in 1976. After Dio left in 1979, Rainbow's sound shifted through different vocalists like Graham Bonnet and Joe Lynn Turner. Blackmore eventually wound the project down in the mid-1990s to pursue Renaissance music.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
