Background notes

Archive material and source history

The Rainmakers formed in Tempe, Arizona in 1983 with Bob Walkenhorst on vocals and guitar, Steve Earle on guitar, Danny Ott on bass, and Rick Miller on drums. Their 1985 album 'Downstream' included the single 'The One That Got Away,' which got some radio play and helped build their early following. Earle left the band in 1986, and Ott died of cancer in 1990.

They kept recording through the 1990s with albums like 'Tornado Alley' and 'Fulton Street.' Some of their songs that people still remember include 'Different Rub,' 'Hunger Moon,' and 'Wilder Side.'

Walkenhorst remained the consistent voice through lineup changes, with James McDowell joining on bass after Ott's death. They released albums periodically into the 2000s and 2010s, including 'Into the Blue' in 2005 and a self-titled album in 2011.
