Raíz de Fole formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s around vocalist and guitarist Mateus Aleluia, bassist Fernando Catatau, and percussionist Fernando Macaé. Their music drew from traditional Brazilian sources like Candomblé rhythms and samba melodies.
Their self-titled debut album came out in 2000, followed by records like 'Bailão do Mundo' in 2002, 'Paraíso Tropical' in 2005, and 'Tetê' in 2008. Songs like 'O Sol e a Lua' and 'Parado no tempo' show their mix of folk roots and more experimental touches.
In 2009, the band faced a plagiarism lawsuit over 'O Sol e a Lua' that resulted in the song being removed from their album. They kept recording afterward, putting out 'Rodopio' in 2015 and 'O Canto do Mar' in 2018.
