Raiz do Rei formed in São Paulo in 1996 with Paulo Ricardo and Paulinho on vocals, Estevão Camargo and Andre Almeida on guitar, Negrete on bass, and João Fera on drums. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1997 and included tracks like 'Tocando em Frente' and 'Tô de Pé.' They followed it up with 'Músicas para Churrasco Vol. 1' in 1999.
Paulo Ricardo left in 2004 to go solo, and the band brought in Jhonny Hooker as a new vocalist. They kept recording through the 2000s and 2010s, putting out albums like 'Pra Tirar o Pé do Chão' in 2003 and an acoustic set in 2005. Some of their songs, including 'Guerreiro Valente' and 'Tempo,' blend reggae and samba rhythms with straightforward lyrics.
