Editor's note

The Ramones built punk rock from Queens.

A New York band that turned short, fast songs into a lasting blueprint.

If you need a place to start, just put on 'Too Tough To Die'. It's all there in under three minutes.

Their self-titled 1976 debut set the template with tracks that rarely broke three minutes, like 'Too Tough To Die'. That sound, simple, catchy, and wired with teenage restlessness, became the foundation for punk rock everywhere. They kept it up for over two decades, never really changing the formula, and you can still hear it in any basement show today.

They formed in Queens in 1974, with Joey, Dee Dee, and Tommy Ramone at the start. Their first three albums came out in quick succession by 1977, and they recorded steadily through the '80s and '90s until their final show in 1996.

The Ramones formed in Queens, New York in 1974, with Jeffrey Hyman (Joey Ramone), Douglas Colvin (Dee Dee Ramone), and Thomas Erdelyi (Tommy Ramone) at the core. They took the Ramones name as a shared surname and played short, fast songs that became a blueprint for punk rock. Their self-titled debut album came out in 1976, followed quickly by 'Leave Home' and 'Rocket to Russia' in 1977.

Their sound was built on simple, catchy structures with lyrics that often touched on teenage life and urban restlessness. Songs like 'Rock 'n' Roll High School' and 'Psycho Therapy' captured that energy in under three minutes. The band kept a consistent lineup for their early years, with Johnny Ramone on guitar joining the founding trio.

They recorded steadily through the 1980s and into the 1990s, putting out albums like 'Animal Boy' in 1986. Tracks such as 'Poison Heart' and 'Too Tough To Die' showed they could write hooks that stuck while keeping their basic approach. The Ramones played their final show in 1996 after more than two decades of touring and recording.

Joey Ramone died in 2001 and Dee Dee Ramone died the following year. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
