In the late 1990s, he helped form the band A Mina de Ouro. Their 2003 debut album had the title track "A Mina de Ouro," which became a hit in Brazil. The song showed Cruz's voice and his feel for percussion, pulling from those Bahian roots but with a pop touch.
There were some management issues around 2007 that led to legal trouble, but the band kept putting out records after that, like 2009's "Samba de Amor."
