Randy Owen grew up in Fort Payne, Alabama, and started playing music with his cousins Jeff and Teddy Gentry. They formed a band called Wildcountry in 1969, playing local clubs before signing with RCA Records in 1976. The group later changed their name to Alabama.
With Alabama, Owen sang lead on a string of country hits through the 1980s and 1990s. After Alabama's run slowed, Owen put out solo albums including 2005's "One on One," which gave the title track a second life.
Some of his solo work, like "Braid My Hair" and "I Confess," showed a quieter side. He still performs occasionally, but mostly stays out of the spotlight these days.
