Archive material and source history

Rapture formed in London in the early 1980s around vocalist John Robb and guitarist Ricky Graham, who shared an interest in punk and electronic music. They added bassist Dave Ruffy and drummer Stephen Taylor, releasing their debut album 'Echoes' in 1986. The band's sound mixed post-punk with funk and soul elements, and they had a radio hit with the title track from their 1987 album 'In the Heat of the Night.'

Robb's lyrics often addressed political and social issues, which drew criticism from some quarters. The group worked with various musicians over time, including Depeche Mode's Martin Gore on their 1988 album 'The Greatest and the Last' and producer Ed Buller on 1991's 'Gold.' Later, former Cure guitarist Perry Bamonte joined in the late 1990s.

Their catalog includes songs like 'Cold On My Side' and 'Misery 24/7,' which reflect their blend of electronic textures with pointed lyrical themes. They released albums periodically through the 2000s, with a compilation 'The Works 1980-2015' appearing in 2016.
