Ra'Som formed in Paris in 1998 as a musical collective. Their sound drew from Afrobeat rhythms, with influences from funk, jazz, and reggae. The group included Jean-Baptiste Godon on vocals and guitar, Dimitri Esperandieu on drums, Blanchard Kouadio on bass, Sabine Kabongo on backing vocals, and Nicolas Giraud on keyboards.
Their 2004 album "Mina Zica" featured the song of the same name, which addressed female circumcision and sparked debate. The group released other albums like "Moustapha" in 2000, "La Dame de Pique" in 2009, and "Afrique" in 2012.
They received a Victoire de la Musique award and a BBC Radio 3 Award for World Music. Their performances at festivals helped bring Afrobeat to wider audiences.
