Ravana formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1997 with Bruno Dourado on vocals and guitar, Fábio Brum on bass, Marcello Rangel on drums, and Mariá Do Céu on percussion. Their self-titled debut came out in 1999, but it was the 2003 album 'Então Vem' that really connected. The title track became a hit, one of those songs that seemed to find its moment.
In 2005, drummer Marcello Rangel died, which changed things for the band. They kept going, but their sound had already been shifting from that early mix of Brazilian rhythms with rock and reggae. Some of their later lyrics got them into trouble with conservative groups, like the song 'Bota Pra Fuder' in 2010, which led to cancelled shows.
They never quite matched the reach of 'Então Vem' or songs like 'To Pensando o Que', but they kept recording through the 2000s. The lineup changed over time, and their music became less about fusion and more direct, sometimes political, sometimes just trying to find a new groove after losing a key part of their rhythm section.
