Ravanes formed in Los Angeles in the late 1980s, led by vocalist Devi. Their debut album 'Talking in Tongues' came out in 1989. The band's sound mixed punk rock with reggae and Middle Eastern elements, which felt unconventional at the time. Songs like 'Begin To Pray' had lyrics that questioned religious ideas and pushed for peace, which sometimes stirred things up.
Devi wrote confrontational lyrics that supported social and political causes, and the band was involved in activism beyond just making music. They worked with human rights and environmental groups. Other members included JP Jones on guitar and bass, and for a few years in the early 1990s, Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins played guitar with them. Matt Chamberlain, who drummed for Pearl Jam, was also in the band from 1991 to 1997.
After 'Talking in Tongues', they released albums like 'Baby, Baby' in 1991 and 'Dissolution' in 1997. Later records included 'No Way Out' in 2003 and 'Ancestral Graffiti' in 2013. Tracks such as 'Controle' and 'Sobre o Destino' show their range, blending raw energy with spiritual themes.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
