Ray, Goodman & Brown formed in 1971 with Harold Ray, Clarence Goodman, and Ronald Brown. Their 1979 single 'Special Lady' became their biggest hit, reaching the top of the R&B charts. The song's smooth harmonies and romantic lyrics made it a quiet storm staple.
They released several albums around that time, including their self-titled 1979 record and 1980's 'Inside Outside.' Other songs like 'Celebrate Our Love' and 'Inside of you' followed a similar polished soul formula. The trio's sound was built around Ray's falsetto lead vocals with Goodman's bass and Brown's tenor providing the foundation.
Ronald Brown left the group in 1982, and Ray and Goodman continued as a duo for a few more years before disbanding in 1986. They reunited briefly in 2001, but the original trio's active recording period was essentially that late 1970s to early 1980s window when 'Special Lady' defined their sound.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
