Red Fang formed in Portland, Oregon in 2005 with Bryan Giles on guitar and vocals, Aaron Beam on bass and vocals, David Sullivan on guitar, and John Sherman on drums. They took their name from an obscure horror movie creature, which gives you a sense of their sensibility. Their early sound mixed heavy metal, punk, and psychedelic rock, and they worked their way up through local gigs and self-released material.
They signed to Sargent House Records in 2009 and released their self-titled debut that same year. Songs like "Prehistoric Dog" and "Wires" became early standouts, built around thunderous riffs and grooves that felt both heavy and catchy. Their lyrics often touched on supernatural or strange themes, but the music itself was grounded in straightforward, powerful rock.
Over the next several years they put out albums like Murder the Mountains, Whales and Leeches, and Only Ghosts. Tracks such as "Blood Like Cream" and "Hank Is Dead" showed they could write hooks without losing their edge. They toured regularly, sometimes opening for bigger acts, but mostly built their following through consistent, no-frills heavy rock.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
