Rede Ativa formed in Rio de Janeiro in 1989, with Beto Jamaica as their vocalist. Their 1993 debut album 'Barato Muito Loko' gave the band its breakthrough, with the title track becoming a national hit.
Along with 'Barato Muito Loko,' songs like 'Velho Homem' and 'Sobe o Morro' helped define their sound. Their music was part of what became known as funk carioca, mixing funk rhythms with Brazilian elements. Keyboardist Léo Maia was another key member in those early years.
They kept recording through the 1990s, putting out albums like 'Balançando os Quadris' in 1995 and 'Tá Danado' in 1997. Beto Jamaica stayed with the band through various lineup changes over time.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
