Background notes

Archive material and source history

Refuge started in the mid-1980s in Rio de Janeiro, originally called A Semente. The group included Sérgio Lopes, Paulo César Baruk, Marquinhos Gomes, and Robinson Monteiro. Their first album was Luz do Mundo.

Their third album, A Manda da Verdade, brought them wider attention. The title track became something people talked about, with Baruk's vocals and lyrics that touched on social issues. Another song from that period, Foda-se o Governo, had a similarly direct tone.

Some in the evangelical community found their approach too political at times. They kept making music that mixed rock and Brazilian sounds with messages about faith and society, like on Renascer. The conversation around their work continued through the 1990s.
