Refuse formed in Lisbon in 1982 with vocalist Pedro "Pidá" Gonçalves, guitarist Rui "Ruca" Cunha, bassist João "Johnny" Pinto, and drummer António "Tuni" Ferreira. They came up through the city's punk scene, playing a raw, direct style that found an audience in Portugal's underground circuit.
Their song "A Saída" came out in 1990 and became something of an anthem. It appeared on their debut album "Sem Saída" the following year. Other tracks like "Glória" and "Mitos" followed as the band released several albums through the 1990s, including "Refuse" in 1993 and "Alma Crua" in 1999.
By the late 1990s, only Pidá and Ruca remained from the original lineup. The band kept working, putting out "A Bala" in 2003, but their music and performances sometimes drew criticism for being confrontational.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
