Rekedum formed in the early 2000s in Grajau, a neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro. The group started with vocalists Pinguim, Dom M, and MC Léo, mixing funk carioca with hip-hop. Their 2004 track 'Popozão' became a breakout hit in Brazil, with its energetic beat and straightforward lyrics catching on in clubs and on the radio.
'Popozão' topped Brazilian charts and found listeners in Europe and Asia, but the song's content also drew criticism. Some listeners felt its lyrics were too explicit or objectified women. Around the same time, the band faced legal issues over copyright claims.
MC Léo left in 2008, and Pinguim followed in 2015, leaving Dom M as the only original member. Rekedum kept putting out music after those changes, though their output slowed compared to the early 'Popozão' years.
