Renato Ruiz came out of Rio de Janeiro in the early 1990s with a song called "Doido Total" that caught on in a big way. It was loud, fast, and a little unhinged, and for a while it seemed to be everywhere. The track gave its name to his debut album in 1992.
His music had a certain chaotic energy that connected with people, and songs like "Meu Amor" and "Péga ele" kept that momentum going. The performances were known for being intense, and the lyrics didn't shy away from being blunt or provocative, which drew both fans and criticism.
Behind the music, Ruiz dealt with significant personal struggles, including substance abuse. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 1998. The title of another song, "Eu Não Vou Mais Voltar Pro Hospício," hints at some of those darker personal themes he was working through.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
