Renato Shuett was born in 1946 in Blumenau, Brazil. He started playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager, and put out his first album in 1967. That record mixed folk, bossa nova, and rock, but it didn't find much of an audience at the time.
Things changed in 1974 with the album 'Renato Shuett e Caco Velho.' The track 'Jesuína' from that record caught on, a ballad about a young woman leaving her village for the city. Its melancholy melody and Shuett's delivery connected with people, and it became his best-known song.
His career had its difficulties after that. He had a reputation for being outspoken and living a bohemian life, which sometimes put him at odds with authorities. In 1979 he was arrested on marijuana charges.
