Rentay formed in 2009 as a Brazilian duo with vocalist and guitarist Reinaldo Penna and bassist Renato Rocha. Their name came from combining syllables of their first names. They started with a folk and alternative rock sound built around Penna's raw vocals and Rocha's bass work.
Their 2012 debut album 'A Distância' gave them their breakthrough. The title track became a hit, with its lyrics about longing connecting with listeners. Other songs from that period like 'Não Aceitou' and 'Pra Nunca Mais' followed similar emotional territory.
In 2014, Rocha left the band over creative differences. They eventually brought in Felipe Zanuto on bass. A few years later, their song 'Triste' drew criticism for its treatment of depression and suicide themes, though the band said they were trying to raise awareness about mental health.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
