Editor's note

Return, the rock band Michael Been led

A brief, intense run in the 1990s that left behind songs like "Sing Me A Song" and "Friends Will Be Friends."

For a sense of the band, try "Sing Me A Song" first. It's a good, straightforward example of what they did.

Return's music came from a real, troubled place. The 1991 debut "Colorblind" had "Can You Forgive Me," which connected with people at the time. Songs like "Sing Me A Song" still hold up because they feel direct and unvarnished.

The band formed around frontman Michael Been and released their first album in 1991. They put out two more records, "Wonderwall" and "Fauve," before Been's death in 1997 ended the project.

Archive material and source history

Return was a rock band led by frontman Michael Been. Their 1991 debut album "Colorblind" included the track "Can You Forgive Me," which found an audience during that period.

Been struggled with addiction, and in 1993 he was arrested for heroin possession. The band released two more albums, "Wonderwall" in 1994 and "Fauve" in 1997, before Been died of a heart attack that same year at age 42. After his death, the remaining members disbanded.

Songs like "Sing Me A Song" and "Friends Will Be Friends" remain in their catalog, though the group's active years were relatively brief.
