Rhymester

Rhymester is a Japanese hip-hop collective formed around MCs Ryuzo Taguchi and Sosuke Miyata, with DJ Shinnosuke Watanabe handling production. They emerged in the early 1990s with their debut album 'Rhyme Caster' in 1993, establishing themselves with a sound that blended hip-hop with soul and jazz elements. Their lyrics often addressed social and political themes, which sometimes put them at odds with authorities and critics.

In 1996, their album 'Rhyme Caster' faced censorship due to its commentary on the Aum Shinrikyo cult. A decade later, their 2006 single 'Hands' drew criticism from right-wing groups for its portrayal of the Japanese flag. Despite these controversies, they continued releasing music, including tracks like 'Hataraku Ojisan' and 'Heat Island' that maintained their focus on social observation and identity.

Their production typically featured intricate beats and layered vocals, creating a cinematic atmosphere that distinguished them from other Japanese hip-hop acts. While they never shied away from political commentary, their music also explored more personal and introspective territory, balancing social critique with individual reflection.
