Ricarlo e Sua Gente formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1990s, led by vocalist Ricarlo Henrique Santos. Their 1992 debut album mixed traditional gospel with contemporary rhythms, but it was the 1995 single 'Eu Sou Mais Jesus' that really connected with listeners. The song became a staple in Brazilian churches and gospel radio.
Their discography includes albums like 'O Poder do Sangue' from 1998 and 'Deus Faz o Impossível' from 2000. Other songs like 'Apaixonado Por Jesus' and 'Bate Coração' followed a similar pattern of straightforward faith messages set to accessible arrangements. They've performed with gospel artists including Aline Barros and Fernanda Brum.
In 2008, the band faced plagiarism accusations over their song 'Não Pare de Crer,' which led to an apology and the song's removal from their catalog. Ricarlo's conservative views on social issues and political support have drawn criticism from some quarters. The current lineup includes keyboardist Danilo Souza, bassist Luciano Almeida, drummer Marcelo Silva, and guitarist Flavinho alongside Ricarlo.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
