Archive material and source history
Rick Astley was born in Newton-le-Willows, England in 1966. He sang in local choirs as a kid and listened to Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. In 1987, producer Stock Aitken Waterman found him and they made 'Never Gonna Give You Up', which became a worldwide hit that summer.
He followed it with other singles like 'She Wants to Dance with Me' and 'Take Me to Your Heart'. Later albums like 'Hold Me in Your Arms' and 'Body & Soul' moved toward soul and R&B, though they didn't reach the same commercial height.
In the early 2000s, Astley took some time away from music for personal reasons. He returned to recording afterward, putting out albums like 'Keep It Turned On' and continuing to perform.
