Editor's note

Ride, the Oxford shoegaze band that defined a sound.

Their 1990 debut 'Nowhere' built a world of layered guitars and reverb.

For the classic Ride sound, 'Vapour Trail' is the one. If you want to hear where they went later, try 'Twisterella'.

Ride's early records gave shoegaze some of its most lasting songs. 'Vapour Trail' and 'Dreams Burn Down' from 'Nowhere' are still the reference points for that washed-out, melodic guitar sound. Even their later, more experimental turn on 'Carnival of Light' kept that core texture intact.

They formed in Oxford in the late '80s and put out 'Nowhere' in 1990. After 'Carnival of Light' in 1994 and 'Tarantula' in 1996, they broke up, then reformed in 2014 with the original lineup.

Ride formed in Oxford in the late 1980s with Andy Bell and Mark Gardener on guitars and vocals, Laurence Colbert on bass, and Steve Queralt on drums. Their 1990 debut album 'Nowhere' established them as a shoegaze band, built around layers of distorted guitars and reverb. Songs like 'Vapour Trail' and 'Dreams Burn Down' from that record became touchstones for the genre.

They followed with 'Carnival of Light' in 1994, which took a more experimental turn. The band broke up in 1996 after releasing 'Tarantula'. Ride reformed in 2014 with the original lineup.
