Rigor Mortis formed in New York City in 1987, coming out of the local hardcore scene. Their self-titled debut album arrived in 1988 and found a cult audience. Vocalist Bruce Corbitt was the consistent presence through various lineup changes.
Songs like "Asphyxia" and "Bodily Dismemberment" defined their sound, heavy, guttural, and unflinching. "Asphyxia" appeared on their 1989 album 'Freakin' Out' and became one of their best-known tracks. They kept recording through the 1990s and into the 2000s, putting out their final studio album, 'Slaves to the Grave', in 2005.
