A Los Angeles band that made quiet ballads and driving indie rock between 1998 and 2008.
If you want to get the feel of them, start with "Portions For Foxes" and then maybe "A Better Son/Daughter." That covers the ground pretty well.
They had a knack for writing songs that felt both personal and anthemic, especially when Jenny Lewis took the lead vocal. "Portions For Foxes" became something of an indie staple, and you can hear that same directness in "The Execution of All Things." Their music held up whether they were playing quietly or turning up the guitars.
They formed in Los Angeles in 1998 and put out their first album, "Take Offs and Landings," in 2001. After "Under the Blacklight" in 2007, the band went on an indefinite hiatus the following year, though they did reunite for some shows in 2013.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
