The Rivieras were a South California group that formed in the late 1950s. They had Billy Hinsche on vocals, Jim Calire on saxophone, John Reyes on guitar, Joe Aguirre on bass, and Hal Blaine on drums. Their sound mixed doo-wop, rockabilly, and R&B.
In 1961 they released "California Sun," which became a hit single. The song's catchy melody and optimistic lyrics connected with listeners. They followed it with "Santa Monica" that same year.
There were lineup changes later, with Calire and Blaine leaving the group. Hinsche faced legal trouble in 1963 with drug charges. The band tried reuniting in the 1970s but didn't regain their earlier momentum.
