Riwaal formed in São Paulo around 2012 with Rafael "Rafa" Riwaal on vocals and guitar, David Picchi on bass, and Thiago Barros on drums. They played local gigs for a couple of years before their single "Samambaia" came out in 2014 and got some attention.
That song, along with "Sentir e Viver," helped them build a following. They put out a debut album called "Adrenalina" in 2016, and another one followed in 2018. The band's sound mixed pop, rock, and some electronic touches.
Some critics questioned their authenticity after "Samambaia" took off, but they kept working. Their music stayed grounded in the São Paulo scene where they started.
