Roberbills formed in 1998 in Monterrey, Mexico, with Roberto Jr. Hinojosa on vocals, Roberto Hinojosa on drums, Gilberto Hinojosa on bass, and Martin Hinojosa on accordion. Their sound pulled from Norteño and Tejano traditions, and they built a following locally before breaking through nationally.
In 2001, the single "Bala Perdida" became a hit, and the album of the same name went platinum. The song's melody and lyrics about unrequited love connected with listeners across Mexico. The band toured internationally after that, playing in the United States, Europe, and Latin America.
In 2004, accordionist Martin Hinojosa died in an accident. The band continued performing, but later years brought accusations of plagiarism and other controversies that shifted public perception of the group.
