Roberto Carlos Braga, known simply as Roberto Carlos, was born in 1941 in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, Brazil. He started playing guitar as a child and formed a band called Sputnik with friends including Erasmo Carlos in 1958. After going solo, his 1961 debut album 'Louco Por Você' found some success, but it was 1963's 'Roberto Carlos Em Ritmo de Aventura' that really established him, featuring songs like 'É Proibido Fumar'.
His music, including tracks like 'Detalhes' and 'Emoções', connected with audiences in Brazil and beyond. He performed internationally, including at Italy's Sanremo Music Festival in 1969.
Roberto Carlos married twice, first to Maria Rita Simões and later to Maria Christina Paolillo. While his career included some controversies, like plagiarism accusations in 1974 that were eventually dismissed, his focus remained on recording and performing. His songs, many dealing with themes of love and romance, became familiar to generations of listeners in Brazil and other Portuguese-speaking regions.
