He formed his first band, Os Vernizes, as a teenager and began mixing those roots with rock, soul, and funk influences.
In 1982, he wrote and released "O Elefante," a song that became a national sensation in Brazil. Its catchy melody and rhythmic complexity made it an anthem at parties and festivals. Other songs like "Seja O Meu Céu," "Baby Doll De Nylon," and "Metalmania" show the range of his work, from soulful ballads to more experimental tracks.
He has collaborated with musicians including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, and Rita Lee. His band has included Claudio Rabeca on accordion, Fabio Lessa on bass, and Manu Prata on drums, with Robertinho handling vocals and guitar.
