Robson Paine formed in São Paulo in 1997 with Robson Paine on vocals and guitar, Henrique Araújo on guitar, André Garibello on bass, and Pedro Arbex on drums. They built a following in underground circles with a sound that drew from post-punk, shoegaze, and Brazilian tropicalia.
Their single 'As Casas Brancas' came out in 2001 and became a hit, leading to a debut album of the same name in 2002. That record, along with songs like 'Canto Ao Pastoreio' and 'Guitarra e Cordeona', got attention for its atmospheric quality and experimental production.
The band released two more albums, 'O Mundo Invisível' in 2004 and 'A Vida Moderna' in 2007. Their music often dealt with themes of alienation and isolation, and they faced some criticism for being aloof or for the content of their lyrics and videos.
Robson Paine stopped releasing music after 2007, but their work, particularly the 'As Casas Brancas' album, remained a reference point for certain Brazilian rock bands that followed.
