Background notes

Archive material and source history

Rodney Griffin is a gospel singer and songwriter from Fort Worth, Texas. He grew up in a Christian home where gospel music was part of life, and that background shaped his vocal approach. In the late 1970s, he put out his first album, 'I'm Gonna Make It,' which included a title track that got some attention.

His song 'God Wants to Hear You Sing' came out in 1982 and became his most recognized work. It's a straightforward gospel piece that connected with listeners. Another song people know is 'He Locked The Gates.'

In the late 1980s, Griffin got into a legal fight over the copyright to 'God Wants to Hear You Sing' and ended up losing the rights to it. He kept making music after that, returning to recording in the 1990s.
