Rodrigo Sayd came up in São Paulo, where he grew up in a Catholic family. He started out listening to The Beatles and Roberto Carlos, but at 17 he had what he calls a spiritual awakening. That led him to leave rock behind and join a Pentecostal church instead.
In 1996 he put out his first album, 'Minha Oração ao Espírito Santo.' The title track became a hit in Brazil, but the record also drew criticism from some conservative religious circles who felt his pop and rock touches were too secular. He kept making music anyway, mixing traditional hymns with more contemporary sounds.
