Ronnettes

The Ronettes started as three teenagers from Harlem - Veronica Bennett, her sister Estelle, and their cousin Nedra Talley. They first sang together as the Darling Sisters in the late 1950s before changing their name to the Ronettes in 1961 when they signed with Phil Spector's Philles Records.

Working with Spector meant recording with his 'Wall of Sound' technique, where he layered instruments and voices into a dense, orchestral backdrop. Their voices cut through that production on songs like 'Be My Baby,' which became their signature hit. They also recorded 'Baby, I Love You' and 'Walking in the Rain' during those early 1960s sessions.

The group disbanded in 1967. Ronnie Bennett later pursued a solo career, while Estelle and Nedra stepped away from music. Their recordings from the Philles years, particularly 'Be My Baby,' have remained touchstones of that girl-group era.
